Frequently Asked Questions:
What is GIS?
GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, manipulating, analyzing and displaying data related to positions on the Earth’s surface. Typically, GIS is used for handling maps of one kind or another. These maps are represented as several different layers, where each layer holds data about a particular kind of feature. Each feature is linked to a position on the graphical image on a map and a record in an attribute table.
What does GIS do for me as a resident of the county?
It helps you understand your community better, and helps the officials in your community serve you better. It helps you see where your children go to school, where your voting district is, where flood zones are, and helps officials protect you from things like hazardous materials releases and storm damage just to name a few.
How is GIS used in the addressing process?
GIS is used to maintain a database of streets, parcels, and addresses. By utilizing tools within the GIS software, an addressing coordinator can assure all addresses conform to established standards and are made immediately available to emergency responders and others needing the information.
How do I get an address for a new parcel created by a property sell-off?
Submit a minor plat survey to
Brian Davis
at Planning & Development Services. If the plat is approved, you must then record it at the clerks office. When the minor plat is recorded by the property owner, the clerk forwards it to the GIS Specialist Adam Reinhardt, who will issue and address. The GIS Specialist will forward the addressed plat to
Oldham County Property Valuation Administration
to issue a new parcel number, thus completing the process. The GIS Specialist will also make notification of the new address to the U.S. Postal Service. (Note: Please obtain the original parcel number from 222-9320 and place it on the minor plat survey prior to submitting it for approval.)
Are addresses containing a suffix permitted in Oldham County? examples: 1450-A, 2801 ½.
No. Oldham County follows the National Emergency Number Association and U.S. Postal Service guidelines for addressing, which discourage the use of suffixes in addressing.
Why does Oldham County Planning & Development Services occasionally change an address?
Our primary concern is for the welfare and safety of our residents. An address correction may be required to efficiently route emergency services (Police, Fire & EMS) to your location. An address correction may also be required when land division in your area negatively affects the address sequence, or does not conform to the National Emergency Number Association or U.S. Postal Service guidelines.
Who should I contact with specific questions about addressing in Oldham County?
Contact Adam Reinhardt at 222-1476 ext. 152 (M-F 8:00-4:30) or by

Who has access to GIS information?
